Operation/Safe Rules for US Team Members Working at Bldg184

Feb. 10, 2004

To carry out the task of chamber integration and testing in Bldg 184 and to assure that we reach our goal of completing all our chambers on schedule with good quality, we set the following policy and rules for every US team member working in Bldg 184.

First of all, we encourage all of us to keep in mind all the time the following words: Safety, Quality and Quantity.

Here safety has the meaning of personnel, chamber, and equipment safety. Safety is assigned highest priority in Bldg 184. It’s everyone’s responsibility to prevent injuries and damage to chambers and equipment.

Every team member working at Building 184 must obey these rules:

  1. Follow all CERN safety rules. CERN emergency tel: 7-4444

  1. Senior person must be present in Building 184 when crane moving chambers. No one is allowed to stand under the object on the crane when the crane is operating.

  1. Clear, visible signs must be attached to equipment and to the corresponding cables/plugs/sockets, specifying the voltage of the power supply. Before plugging in the power cable of a device, make sure the power input has the correct voltage for the device.

  1. The `traveler' for work on chamber integration and testing must be strictly followed. Each item on the `traveler' must be filled out.

  1. A clear, visible sign must be put on a chamber once HV has been applied to the chamber.

  1. Do not delete/modify any files and programs not produced by you on the DAQ systems and PCs in Bldg 184.

  1. Pay attention to cables, tubing and anything on the floor to avoid tripping over such items. If you do trip over items on the floor, report this to your supervisor.

  1. Before opening or closing any channel of the gas system in Bldg184, make sure that anyone using the other channels is informed, and measures have been taken to isolate the other channels.

  1. Switch off the electric fan and soldering iron when finished with their use.

  1. Be extremely cautious while moving anything around the chambers, or walking around the chamber with tools and materials.

  1. Don’t unplug or replace any power cords that have been taped. Don’t unplug any power cord if you are not sure whether someone is using it. Before you unplug or plug in any power cord, check the specified power and read the cable tags.

  1. Don’t touch any settings on devices without permission from your supervisors.

  1. When using bottled gas, check the gas content. Cover the bottle with safety caps before you move the bottle. Fasten the bottle firmly to a stable support with chains when using bottled gas around chambers.

  1. Get permission before using any tools, parts and equipment that do not belong to you. Register what you borrow from the UW/UM team.

  1. Return tools back to the cabinet or toolbox, and put the rechargeable batteries onto the chargers before going home.

  1. Drive CERN cars only when authorized. Never drive a CERN car beyond authorized regions. Special authorization is needed if you must drive beyond Gex and Geneva airport.

  1. Report to your supervisor immediately any incident involving injuries or damaged equipment. Also report any situation or circumstance that you believe to be unsafe. Let you supervisor know when you travel out of town.
